Wyndham Championship

The Man From Augusta

The tournament course this week is Sedgefield Country Club which has played host to this event since 2008. Webb Simpson is the defending champion after winning by three shots finishing -18, ahead of George McNeill last year.

The Wyndham Championship is the final opportunity for the players outside of the top 125 on the money list to make it into the money train that is the Fedex Playoffs.

Sedgfield is ranked as the 13th easiest course on the current tour. Although the greens have been overhauled completely with Bermuda grass so it should make it that bit tougher for the field. I am not saying that rounds in the very low 60s will be rare, the players will just have to work that little bit harder for their birdies.

The man from Augusta, Georgia, Charles Howell III is my top pick this week. It has been evident since day 1 of his professional career that this guy can play some great golf. But it has failed to materialise in to him being a world beater. Last season he played 30 tournaments, finishing in the Top 25 15 times (which includes 5 missed cuts), 50% is not too shabby by anyone on the tours standards. This year he has failed to fire on the same level but at The Sony Open in Hawaii where he finished 2nd he showed some signs of what we can expect when things click for this man.

Punters that religiously follow Howell have suffered financially in the long term this season but things could be about to turn from red to green with a big performance in North Carolina. In this event last season he finished in 4th place and two years previous to that finished 12th. It is clear he likes it around Sedgfield and sitting 63rd in the race to the Fedex Playoffs the pressure is off and he will go very close this week.

Recommendation: Back Charles Howell III who is widely available at 66/1 on the High Street or 80 on the exchanges.
